Let’s Draw a Mandala Inspired by a Kamon

Full Moon Session No.29

A kamon is a distinctive emblem that carries significant historical and cultural meaning in Japan, symbolising family heritage and identity. There are thousands of kamons and they are all made geometrically.

Kamon have been in use since the Heian period (794–1185), gaining prominence during the Kamakura period (1185–1333) as symbols of samurai clans.

In this video I’m going to be drawing a mandala inspired by the geometry of the mukou-hanabishi kamon. First I’ll figure out the geometry of the pattern then I’ll create my own pattern based on that geometry.

So, wanna draw a mandala with me?

There’s so much about Zac’s videos that are beyond instructional. His voice is soothing and feels like a friend sharing his secret to joy. The videos are easy to follow along with. His love of mandalas is infectious and his philosophical overtones are inspiring/warming to the soul.

I have been following Zak and his channel for over a year now. I found geometric drawing at a time in my life where I was going through a lot of change. Positive change, and following the tutorials played a huge part in that. Thank you.

Loads of information and techniques at my fingertips. Zak is an amazing teacher and has helped me grow as an artist.

You’ve helped me more deeply appreciate and develop skill to draw geometry. I found you on YouTube when I started having an interest in sacred geometry and when you started the circle site, I was happy to support what you’re doing. I’ve gotten a lot of value out of watching you draw and enjoy your deep thoughts along the way.

Doing beautiful art that requires brain power. I have Parkinson and I showed my doctor some of the work I have done from this sight. He told me this was such a great thing to do to make my brain produce more dopamine.

I have recently started with Zak’s tutorials and have finished the seven chakras. The tutorials were thorough, easy to follow, and a lot of fun. I know I will continue with this play for a while. The only problem is that there are so many great inspirations, so little time.

I am always mesmerized watching Zak draw.
I love his designs and how he makes it seem so easy!

Easy access to effective tutorials for a wide range of geometrical techniques, as well as access to a community of like-minded people excited to learn and share their works and wisdoms. The included monthly moon calendars are also a very sick perk.

I love that there are so many different options to choose from, yet the site is so easy to navigate! Finding what I feel like learning that day doesn’t take forever. I really love the beginners series tutorials too. Zak breaks everything down and shows you, step by step, the what, why and how to getting results you’ll love!!

I found Zac’s website a couple of months ago. Since then, I have drawn quite a few mandalas and some other geometric art. The tutorials have helped me greatly in producing some pieces I am really happy with. They are well explained and done in real time so very easy to follow along. Thank you!
